Carers Trust Tyne and Wear is a Gateshead based charity. For over 30 years, we’ve supported Gateshead residents living with the challenge of providing unpaid care to someone who is frail, has a chronic illness, disability or addiction.

Our mission is to enable carers to enjoy a life alongside caring. To achieve this, we provide two key services. Our Young Carer Service supports 5–17-year-olds through health, wellbeing and social programmes. Our Carer Relief Service enables carers to take a short, regular break from their caring role by providing replacement care.

About You

We are looking for trustees that share our vision of a better life for carers. While not a requirement, we would particularly welcome applicants with experience of:

  • Being a carer
  • The care sector
  • Working with children and / or young people
  • Finance or accountancy
  • Business management
  • Marketing
  • Fundraising
  • HR
Commitment

Trustee meetings are held six times per year, generally at our site in Highfield, Rowlands Gill. Trustees will occasionally meet with staff in sub-groups to work on specific topics as and when needed, such as our Finance Sub-group. Trustees have a tenure of three years, with an option to remain on board for another term.

Why Be a Trustee With Us?

I have always felt that supporting the local community through voluntary work is important.
Not only does the community benefit, but on a personal level, it gives you an enormous feeling of well-being and pride that you're making a contribution. So when I was asked if I would like to become one of the trustees of Carers Trust Tyne and Wear, I said yes.
I have recently retired and this opportunity allows me to keep my mind sharp, bring my previous skills and knowledge to the organisation but most of all, meet new people. Everyone is lovely- I recommend it!

We’re an established charity with a reputation for high quality services and a history of innovation, flexibility and being open to the views and wishes of our carers. We have a successful history of securing funding and hold two five-year contracts with the Local Authority. As a member of the national Carers Trust network, we are part of the largest body supporting carers in the UK and maintain legal compliance through their policy framework.
We currently support approximately 700 young and adult carers and demand for our services is increasing. The social care and charity sectors are both facing exceptional challenges so our trustee roles are an opportunity to play an important part in driving organisational development and securing our long-term future.

Benefits

I've made new friends and enjoyed the stimulation of discussing the challenges faced by the charity and how best to handle them. It's been enlightening to work really closely with trustees drawn from other sectors of life and learn from their experience and knowledge.
We'll all at some point in our lives be a carer. It's been immensely satisfying to be part of an organisation which provides such vital support to carers when they need it most.
